A Collaboration Rooted in Legacy, Music, and Shared Purpose

The Grammy Award-winning Steep Canyon Rangers have long admired the music and legacy of Elizabeth “Libba” Cotten. Their recording of Shake Sugaree on the Grammy Award-winning album North Carolina Songbook helped introduce Libba’s music to a new generation and ultimately inspired Left-Handed Little Girl.

My connection to the Rangers began while listening to performances of Shake Sugaree online. Their interpretation immediately resonated with me, and what began as admiration for their work soon grew into a friendship, a collaboration, and a shared commitment to carrying Libba’s legacy forward.

That connection is especially meaningful because I first recorded Shake Sugaree with my Granny when I was twelve years old. Decades later, I now have the opportunity to record that same song with the Steep Canyon Rangers, bringing its story full circle for a new generation of listeners.
