Meet Libba

Elizabeth “Libba” Cotten

Elizabeth “Libba” Cotten (1893–1987) was one of America’s most beloved and influential folk artists. A self-taught musician, songwriter, and storyteller, she created music that continues to inspire generations of musicians around the world.

Born in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, Libba began playing guitar as a child and wrote the now-classic song Freight Train while still a young girl. Decades later, her music would be rediscovered and celebrated for its originality, beauty, and enduring impact on American folk music.

A Life of Music and Perseverance

Libba’s journey was remarkable. While raising a family and working to support her loved ones, she continued making music, often away from public attention. Her talent was later rediscovered through an unexpected connection with the Seeger family, leading to performances, recordings, and widespread recognition of her contributions to American music.

Throughout her life, Libba remained humble, generous, and deeply devoted to her family. Those who knew her remember not only her extraordinary musical gifts, but also her kindness, strength, and perseverance.

Her Legacy Lives On

Today, Libba’s songs continue to be performed and recorded by artists across many genres. Her influence can be heard in folk, roots, bluegrass, Americana, and beyond.

Left-Handed Little Girl was created to celebrate her life, honor her music, and introduce her story to new generations of listeners. Through this project, her family, friends, and fellow musicians are working together to ensure that her legacy continues to grow for years to come.
