The Magic of a Simple Encounter

In the early 1950s, a little girl became separated from her mother in a department store. The woman who comforted her and helped reunite them was Elizabeth “Libba” Cotten. The little girl was Peggy Seeger. That chance encounter led Libba into the home of one of America’s most influential musical families, where her extraordinary talent was rediscovered and her music was shared with the world.

My name is Brenda Evans, and I am Elizabeth Cotten’s great-granddaughter. More than sixty years after Libba first met the Seegers, a simple message to the Grammy Award-winning Steep Canyon Rangers grew into a friendship, a collaboration, and ultimately a shared vision.
